Espresso — product terms

The rules specific to Espresso for Mac — Free and Pro editions, the trial, devices, updates and activation. They complete the general EULA.

Version 1.0 · Effective 29 September 2026

These product terms are part of our End User License Agreement and prevail over it for Espresso — the Mac app, its command-line tool (espresso), its extensions and integrations (Shortcuts, Raycast, Alfred, the MCP server for AI assistants) and its documentation. Purchases are covered by the Terms of Sale & Refunds; data by the Privacy Policy and Espresso privacy details.

Publishers and licensors: [Person 1: full name] (VAT no. [Person 1: VAT number]) and [Person 2: full name] (VAT no. [Person 2: VAT number]), under the Moka Solutions brand. Website: espressoformac.com · Guide: docs.espressoformac.com · Support: support@mokasolutions.dev.

1. Espresso Free

Espresso Free is free of charge, forever, for personal, non-commercial use. It is a complete app, not a time-limited demo. "Non-commercial" means you don't use it by or for a business, organisation or public body, or as part of work you are paid for — for that, you need Espresso Pro.

2. Espresso Pro

An Espresso Pro licence:

  • is a one-time purchase, not a subscription;
  • belongs to one person, who may use Espresso Pro for any lawful purpose, including commercial use;
  • can be active on up to three Macs that person owns or uses;
  • includes all updates of Espresso, for as long as Espresso is developed.

An organisation needs one licence for each person who uses Espresso. For volume licences write to hello@mokasolutions.dev.

If we ever create a substantially new product with a different name (for example "Espresso 2"), it may be sold separately. That will never take anything away from Espresso as you bought it: your licence keeps working with the versions of Espresso it covers, and we will say clearly, before you buy, if a new product is planned.

The features of each edition are listed on the Espresso Pro page of the guide. We may add features to both editions over time.

3. Free trial of Espresso Pro

  • The trial lasts 14 days from activation of the trial code, is free and needs no payment method.
  • It is intended for evaluation, one per person and one per Mac.
  • You receive the code by email; the newsletter is a separate, optional choice.
  • When the trial ends, Espresso returns to Espresso Free by itself: nothing is charged, and your indexes and settings are kept. Features and disks beyond the free edition are kept but locked until you buy a licence.

4. Activation, devices and offline use

You activate a licence or trial code in Espresso › Settings › Espresso Pro. To move a licence to another Mac, choose Deactivate This Mac first, then activate it on the new one. If you no longer have access to a Mac (for example, it was lost or sold), write to us and we will free its slot.

Once activated, Espresso works offline. While Pro is active, it renews its licence with our server about once a month when online; refunded, disputed or published keys stop working. If the server can't be reached, Espresso Pro keeps working.

5. Updates

Espresso checks for updates once a day by default (with Sparkle, an open-source updater), and asks before installing, unless you choose to install updates automatically; you can turn automatic checks off in Settings. Updates are signed, so that only genuine updates can be installed.

6. Your files

Espresso reads information about your files to build a searchable index on your Mac. It acts on your files only when you ask it to — for example to open, reveal, rename, move to Trash, copy or drag items. It never permanently deletes your files: items you remove go to the Trash, where you can restore them. Renaming many items at once always shows a preview first. Keep backups anyway.

Espresso may ask for Full Disk Access so that it can see folders macOS protects. It is optional: without it, Espresso indexes everything else.

7. Features that use on-device intelligence

Ask the Barista (natural-language search) uses Apple's on-device language model through Apple Intelligence, and photo search by content uses Apple's Vision framework, both on your Mac. They turn your words or your photos into search terms; the results may be imperfect. Nothing is sent to us or to Apple's servers by Espresso for these features. They require a compatible Mac and macOS version, and Apple Intelligence where noted.

8. Integrations

With Espresso Pro you can connect Espresso to Shortcuts, the command line, Raycast, Alfred and AI assistants (through the Model Context Protocol). Connections are off until you set them up. Whatever an integration searches — typically file names and paths — goes to that app, and for cloud-based AI assistants to their provider, under their own terms.

9. System requirements

Espresso requires a Mac with macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Some features need a newer macOS or specific hardware; the guide says which.

10. Refunds

You can get a full refund within 14 days of purchase, for any reason — see the Terms of Sale & Refunds.
